Weekly Art Classes in Tenambit for Adults - all levels

Third Term in 2026

Drawing & Painting People

Beyond the Portrait

This term we move beyond the face and into the full human figure. Using photographs (and, if possible, a live model for one or two sessions), you’ll learn how to draw and paint people in a way that feels natural, balanced and believable.

Medium: Charcoal and graphite (first 2 weeks) Choose your own medium (final 4 weeks)
Focus: Proportion, gesture, structure, balance, clothing, light and tone, with an introduction to colour.
Format: Structured, demo-led classes with clear, step-by-step guidance

Over the six weeks, we’ll build from the basic structure of the figure through to a finished work in colour. We’ll explore:

  • proportion and how it changes with pose and viewpoint
  • gesture, balance and natural-looking poses
  • simplifying the figure into basic shapes and forms
  • drawing clothing and understanding how it follows the body
  • using light and tone to create three-dimensional form
  • introducing colour while maintaining good structure and values

We’ll begin with graphite and charcoal before moving into colour, where you can work in your preferred medium.

The emphasis throughout will be on understanding the figure rather than relying on rigid measurements — giving you a practical approach you can use when drawing or painting people in different poses.

Suitable for beginners as well as more experienced artists wanting to strengthen their figure work.

Why Learn With Me?

I’ve been teaching art for over 12 years, and my goal is to help you discover the joy and confidence that comes from creating something of your own.

Artist Vicki Pakau

I had the privilege of being in Hetties' art class in Perth. It was the highlight of my week, not only was I improving my drawing skills it was like meeting up with friends each week. I was able to produce work that I didn't think I could ever do, under her guidance. Hettie introduced me to drawing with coloured pencils which has become my favourite medium. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone wanting to learn, to think about your subject, to look at things differently, and be excited about what you will be doing each lesson.

It is nice to hear from you Hettie and how lucky people will be to have you as their new art teacher. You taught us how to hold the pencil in a certain way which helped to create a more sensitive composition.

The classes were always friendly and informal and professional. The way to simplify a composition was a very important area which you (Hettie) explained well. Various mediums were also used such as charcoal, inks and coloured pencils.

The subject each week was very interesting and I would recommend Hettie as an art teacher to both beginners and advanced students.

I recently had the pleasure of attending one of Hettie's portrait workshops in pastel. Over the two days Hettie guided us through the stages of drawing, building up layers and creating a realistic likeness. Each participant was given valuable and constructive feedback and I learned so much! Thank you Hettie, I look forward to attending more workshops in the future.
