A six-week exploration of drawing and painting the human figure.
Third Term 2026
Beyond the Portrait
This term we move beyond the face and into the full human figure. Using photographs (and, if possible, a live model for one or two sessions), you’ll learn how to draw and paint people in a way that feels natural, balanced and believable.
Medium: Your choice of soft pastel, charcoal or watercolour
Focus: The human figure – proportion, gesture, balance, clothing, light and colour
Format: Structured, demo-led classes with clear, step-by-step guidance
Over six weeks we’ll break the figure down into manageable stages, making what often seems like a difficult subject much easier to understand. We’ll cover simple measuring techniques, capturing movement and posture, understanding how clothing follows the body, and creating convincing, expressive figure paintings.
The aim is to complete at least one finished figure artwork while building the confidence to tackle people in a wide variety of poses and situations.
Whether you’ve always wanted to draw people or have avoided figures because they seemed too complicated, this course is designed to build your skills one step at a time.
